Time to check on the latest news surrounding the Pittsburgh Steelers.

The Pittsburgh Steelers’ season is over, but if you think the news surrounding the black-and-gold is over — think again. For the drama-filled Steelers, things are just heating up, and this is where the daily links article comes in. You might have missed some key news, and we fill you in and give you the latest, and sometimes greatest, news surrounding the Steelers.

Today in the Black-and-gold links article we take a look at how although Donte Moncrief is a quality receiver, he is far from the answer to the wide receiver question opposite JuJu Smith-Schuster.

Let’s get to the news:

  • There are some Steelers fans who believe Donte Moncrief will be the answer to the Steelers’ need at wide receiver with Antonio Brown gone. While he might fill a void on the 53-man roster, he is far from the answer…especially when it comes to opening up JuJu Smith-Schuster on the opposite side.

Carter’s Classroom: Moncrief won’t free up JuJu

By: Chris Carter, DKPittsburghSports

JuJu Smith-Schuster is ready to be the Steelers’ No. 1 receiver, but there’s no mistaking the team’s need for another playmaking wide receiver. Though they added Donte Moncrief in free agency, Kevin Colbert still needs to be active in the draft to find a receiver adept at making plays while split wide and outside the numbers…

…Having Antonio Brown allowed Smith-Schuster to line up all over the field while Randy Fichtner drew formations that gave Ben Roethlisberger weapons that scared defenses in various ways. Brown’s ability to succeed outside the numbers meant defenses had to pay closer attention to him, while Smith-Schuster could be where he’s best — in the slot.

Fichtner preferred to put Smith-Schuster somewhere in the middle of the field where defenses had to assign slot cornerbacks, safeties and sometimes linebackers to cover him because Brown drew their top coverage men.

Emmanuel Sanders: When I left Steelers, Kevin Colbert said I’m no Antonio Brown

By: Michael David Smith, ProFootballTalk

That’s the word from Broncos wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders, who says that when he left the Steelers to sign a three-year, $15 million contract with the Broncos in 2014, Colbert scoffed at the Steelers matching that deal and told Sanders he’s not as good as Brown.

“The Steelers offered me a crappy deal. They offered me three years, $9 million, $1 million guaranteed,” Sanders said on 104.3 The Fan. “I’ll never forget when they offered me the deal, I declined the deal, I went into Kevin Colbert’s office and said, ‘I don’t want to take the deal.’ He looks at me and he goes, ‘Who do you think you are, Antonio Brown?’ I wanted to say, ‘F-you.’ I’ll never forget that.”

Colts reach a deal with Justin Houston

By: Darin Gantt, ProFootballTalk

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, the Colts have agreed to a deal with former Chiefs pass-rusher Justin Houston. It’s a two-year, $24 million deal, for a team which had paced itself so far this offseason.

Houston had nine sacks in 12 games for the Chiefs last year, and has 78.5 in eight seasons. It’s a drop-off from the 22.0 he had in 2014 which led to a contract, but he’s still a steady disruptor for a defense which could use that.
